Reiki therapy can be used alone or in conjunction with other complimentary and conventional treatments for physical pain and is seen by the NHS to be useful to support the body during medical treatment.
The health benefits of Reiki can be:
- to relax and strengthen your wellbeing
- reduce pain, anxiety, and fatigue
- help manage symptoms
- reduce side effects of medications
- support recovery after injuries or surgery.
As your anxiety, stress and pain lessen, you will feel more hopeful about regaining your health.
Having Reiki whilst you are being treated using conventional medicine or therapy can help you to manage the sometimes-unpleasant side effects of these treatments and give you the strength to endure them more comfortably.
Reiki therapy often clears the mind, enabling you to think more clearly, especially about your self-care and in this way, Reiki can help people become more actively involved in managing their own health.
What happens in our first Reiki for pain session?

The first big step has been taken, you have made an appointment for Reiki therapy session, but now what?
When you arrive for your first session we will have a talk about why you have come for a therapy session. This is important to help me to know how to structure the Reiki healing session. Different ‘Chakras’ have control over different physical and emotional areas of the body. We can also discuss what you feel comfortable with.
I will then ask you to sit in a comfortable chair or lie on my therapy table, fully clothed. If you prefer I will also place a light blanket over you.
What happens during your Reiki Therapy?
If you are happy for me to do so I play soothing music in the background which can help you to relax and get more from your Reiki therapy session. I also have soothing sounds like rain falling or waves against the shore.
I will begin to place my hands lightly on or over specific areas of your head, upper body, arms and legs using different hand shapes, for between 2 and 5 minutes at a time. During this time I am working with the universal energy.
If you are tender or sore in any particular area of your body, such as a burn, then my hands will be held just above the wound. We can discuss this before your session. If at any time you encounter any discomfort you can simply ask me to stop.
While I am holding my hands on or over you, the transfer of energy takes place. During this time, you may experience a warm or tingling sensation. I hold each hand position until the I sense that the energy has stopped flowing between me to you. At this point I move on.
Our session will finish with a talk on how you are feeling. Reiki healing can induce deep relaxation and even sleep and so it may be necessary for you to need a minute or two to bring your consciousness back to the present. If and when you are ready to we will talk about the session
I work from home so it is a more intimate experience and I do have a lovely dog called Scooby who loves meeting new people, he is a very gentle dog and will go to sleep once the healing starts.
Distant Reiki healing
I also offer distant Reiki healing which is the practice of ‘sending’ healing to a person (or animal) who is not able to attend an appointment. Distant healing is known by other names such as absent healing, Reiki distance healing, remote Reiki healing and many more.
Why consider distant Reiki Healing?
There are many benefits in choosing distant Reiki healing
- Receive Reiki in the comfort and familiarity of your own surroundings
- No need for the inconvenience and cost of travelling
- Continue to receive Reiki if you are away from Cardiff or even out of the country
- Offer Reiki as a gift for someone else
- Allows you to give Reiki to anxious or stressed animals that dislike strangers near them
- Allows Reiki to be given to larger animals such as horses and ponies
How is distant Reiki healing given?
So that I can give distant Reiki healing I need the name of the person (or animal) and, if possible, a photograph of them. I find that it helps me to have something physical to hold to represent the person I am giving Reiki healing to and so I use a large teddy bear when sending distant healing which helps me to visualise the recipient.
During the distant Reiki healing session I ‘tune’ into the recipient, making the energetic connection and sending the energy to the that specific location.

Velindre is a specialist NHS cancer treatment centre located on the perimeter of Cardiff. They have a short page explaining the benefits of using Reiki during treatment as part of the patients care and recovery:
